There are a number of Americans that struggle with learning and modality differences every day. The learning styles and differences are not wrong; they are just different. If this is you or your clients, then you may experience issues in the following areas:
- Disorganization -- difficulty processing issues
- Reading Challenges - slow, difficulty in comprehension or misunderstanding of directions
- Oral Communication Problems - frequent miscommunications
- Oral Communication Problems - messages via voicemail may be difficult to understand
- Written Communication Problems - spelling difficulty, handwriting that is difficult to read, dislike for taking notes, you cannot read your own notes
- Short Attention Span - you go from one thing to the next or you get bored when doing repetitive or routine tasks

- Non -Supportive Social Environment - may have family members or friends who do not comprehend their learning style or their difficulties with daily activities
- Impulsivity - Misinterpretation of body language or facial expressions
Individuals with learning differences are those who have processing methods that are different. Learning disability is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems. A learning disability can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills. Learning differences include a disorder in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, write, spell or to do mathematical calculations; individual has average to above average intelligence .
Do you work with someone that has struggles noted above? Here are some tips to help you when working with clients with learning differences:
- Accept and acknowledge your differences
- Be inventive
- Be patient
- Search for helpful and creative ways to help your clients or co-workers
- Be calm
- Avoid judgment
- When asked - slow down – listen and observe your client’s signals for this instruction
- Be positive
Your client may have noticeable learning styles, modalities and differences, or they may have only minor differences. What ever the level, it is important for us to find the best way to work effectively. Learning about differences is the first step. The next is to utilize workable techniques and practices in our on-site work as well in all our communications. Take the time to research and train in these areas. Your clients will thank you for it.
