Individuals Struggling with Hoarding in Iowa and Nebraska Have a Powerful Resource for Help

Professional Organizer, Ellen Hankes, Earns Hoarding Specialist Certificate

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA –December 2, 2010 -- Professional Organizer Ellen Hankes, CPO-CD© of Calahan Solutions, Inc. has been named a Hoarding Specialist by the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD).  Ms. Hankes is the first person in Iowa and Nebraska to earn the Hoarding Specialist certificate.

It is estimated that 4% of the population are compulsive hoarders, and countless family members, neighbors and friends are impacted by the hoarding behavior. Hoarding presents health and safety hazards for the resident and first responder as well as public health concerns.

Compulsive hoarding is characterized by

(1) the acquiring and failure to discard possessions with limited value,

(2) severely cluttered living spaces, and

(3) significant distress or impairment in functioning.

Requirements for the certificate include a preliminary Chronic Disorganization (CD) Specialist Certificate, completion of extensive educational requirements including reading, attending specified teleclasses, and passing an exam based on coursework and general knowledge of hoarding behaviors.
